Aspirations
by Emily Poole
A humble pond edged in cattails is a glowing stage full of promise to a young red-winged blackbird. Alighting on his chosen cattail, he fluffs his crimson epaulettes and sings enthusiastically to the world. Though the females of his species are discerning, he could attract as many as 15 this season if he is impressive enough. There is no life bond among red-winged blackbirds; the only loyalty expected is to the song and dance of springtime.
