The Old Oak Guide

by Ron Lemen

We just recently visited our old home town in Northern California recently and I have to say we were pretty spoiled with nature all around us in a suburban setting.  There were these large oak fields filled with old, twisted, gnarled oak trees that resemble trolls, elves, gnomes, dragons, and every other kind of creature we fill our young minds with.

This drawing reflects the golden hour just before dinner in summer time, that last hour we want to hold on to with our friends running free in the fields, saving the princess or risking life and limb to find the gold and save the kingdom from ruin.  This is one of those old oak actors pointing the way to home, with the sun as our marker.

The drawing is done on Fabriano paper 140 lb. stock and pastel pencils, a smudge stump, eraser pencil and kneaded eraser.  It is 11 x 14″ in the border, 12 x 15″ outside the frame line.
