The Columbia Crew
by Emily Poole
Dutchman’s Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) is a flower commonly associated with the eastern United States, but an isolated population also exists in the Columbia River basin in the Northwest. This wildflower can be found near cascading waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge, sprouting from the damp talus where salamanders squirm. This painting of Dutchman’s Breeches is paired with three salamander species found in the area: the Larch Mountain Salamander (left), Dunn’s Salamander (middle), and the Cascade Torrent Salamander (right).
