Sunset over Bear’s Den

by Stephen Sengebush

Overlooked – Finding the Unexpected

Every year I make a point to return to the Bear’s Den.  Follow an easy trail off the road to the ruins of an abandoned mill, then around the corner to the falls themselves.  It was late fall, and I’d arrived too late.  The sun had already sunk behind the cliff’s edge, casting the falls into deep shadow.  But as I turned around, the last light leaped across the river’s bend and onto the steep bank beyond.  I had just enough time to snap a couple of photos and take some color notes.  This painting was completed a few days after.

Sunset over Bear’s Den” is an original oil painting, 12″x9,” oil on oil-primed linen, and mounted in a 3/4″ antique gold and black floater frame.
