Soul Catcher, color pencil version 1

by Kelley Hensing

This piece is from a series in progress exploring the beauty and decay of life. Our lives are rich with memories which creates a perception of identity. As the perils of age overcome us our thoughts grow tangled and fleeting.

I’ve created a few different versions of this image, it’s transformed itself slightly with each rendition. (Fitting with how memories work.) In the piece available here I’ve created the image on dark gray paper using color pencils, white chalk and gold paint. There are a few other variations planned using this style, this being the first. The gold paint on the crown and embellishments is reflective when the lighting is at the right angle to catch it. The final version will be in oils and in a different color palette, on view at IX con coming up this October.

image size: 10.5 x 13.5

frame size:17.5 x 21.5

Frame picks up tones in the piece, and is matted and signed.

Bio: Kelley is inspired by the mysterious. She grew up in a house by the woods surrounded by animals and wilderness, so many of her themes bring together strange nature, mortality and spirituality. Using archetypes of characters from folklore and myth as well as her own stories, she enjoys portraying unusual tales that symbolize our emotions and fears.

Kelley is an artist residing in Brooklyn, NY. She earned her MFA from the School of Visual Arts and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of design. Her favorite mediums are oils on wood and pencil on paper, and she loves to create her work by hand. Her favorite genres range from gothic and steampunk to classic fantasy and legends. Traveling is her only other passion equal to a career in art and is a vital component in inspiring her work.
