Sculptural Twists

by Odera Igbokwe

Acrylics and color pencil on paper

When I was creating this piece, I was inspired by the natural spirals of plants and trees. This spiralling and coiling pattern, represents the energy needed to nourish our crowns and journeys towards transformation.

I am constantly in awe of the versatility and creativity of hair across the African diaspora. Hair art can push the boundaries of sculpture, patterning, and styling. This spiral braid hones in on the power of hair art and hair sculptures, with the ancient symbology of spirals.
