Ourself Behind Ourself Concealed

by Hilary Clarcq

This 14″ by 17″ oil painting was created for the 2017 Month of Fear “Hollow” challenge. It was inspired by one of my favorite poems by Emily Dickinson, “One need not be a chamber to be haunted.” Here’s a stanza that I particularly enjoy:

Ourself behind ourself, concealed —
Should startle most —
Assassin hid in our Apartment
Be Horror’s least.
