Goddess of an Unforgiving Sea
by Madalyn McLeod
Illustration for my in-progress oracle deck, Nature Spirit Oracle.
Sedna is the goddess of the sea and marine animals in Inuit mythology. Sedna’s father cut off all her fingers, and then her fingers became the mammals of the sea. She guards these creatures from human hunters by hiding them in her long, dark hair. She is generally vengeful and guarded, but can sometimes be placated by humans who treat her with compassion and respect.
Mixed media: Colored pencil, watercolor, ink, and gouache.
5×7 in matted to 8×10 in.

She grew up in North Carolina, and spent a lot of time reading and drawing throughout her childhood. She received a BFA in illustration from East Carolina University in 2013, and since then, she has been working on a body of personal artwork, illustrating books, and showing at local galleries. She understands the world is often dark, and wants to bring a little magic into it.
