“Doubles, dancing dolls and automata, waxwork figures, alter egos and mirror selves, spectral emanations—what makes them uncanny is precisely the way they subvert the distinction between the real and the phantasmic, plunging us instantly and vertiginously into the hag-riddled world of the unconscious.” —Terry Castle, The Female Thermometer

While Nen’s work focuses heavily on the representation of emotional pain as physical suffering, Fleshwounds steps further by representing suffering as a commodity to be beautified, objectified, and sexually desired. Fleshwounds was a focal object during an episode of the artist’s intermittent Cotard’s delusion, transcending its original purpose to serve as a cover for a graphic novel.

Nen’s roots generally lead her to juxtapose the erotic and the grotesque. She dresses objectively horrific imagery in beautiful detail and surreal imagery to coax the viewer past the revulsion one might experience when encountering a corpse or instance of mortal physical trauma. Nen invites the viewer to trespass into an experience where one might understand a little of what it means to suffer, die, and then continue to function.
